Webquest: School Shootings

The President of Argentina has just established a School Safety and Security Committee with the purpose of advising school authorities on issues of school safety and security in our nation. The President has asked all 4th Year High School students to research on the topic of school violence in our country, compared to what is happening in the rest of the world, in order to prevent or stop school violence that can derive in school shootings.
You will have to examina and assess the extent of the problem of school shootings in the world and in our country, examine the causes of the problem, compare the causes of shootings in other countries with the ones in Argentina (similarities and differences), and suggest ways of overseeing the implementation of policies to assure the safety and security of Argentine school children.
You are expected to work in groups on the following tasks:
- An oral presentation supported by a Power Point Presentation including video segments (You Tube)about the problem in Argentina and the rest of the world. The aim of this presentation is to be shared at school as a preventive measure.
- A written report addressed to the President describing the situation and suggesting possible policies to prevent/ stop the problem.

Nancy's comments and questions

Hello 4th Year Students! Will you tell us a little bit about yourselves when you post? For example, your name and your interests? I will have my students do the same.

About the book: Did you feel like the beginning of the book grabbed your attention? Have you ever really thought about what you can accomplish in 19 minutes?

School violence in the US is something we are concerned about. Have you ever experienced school violence personally? Have you ever been bullied? Have you looked at the timeline of school violence since 1996? Not all of the places are in the States.

What are your thoughts? How would you handle it if someone came in to your school and started shooting?

Hope to talk to all of you soon!

Our first novel: "NINETEEN MINUTES" by Jodi Picoult

"Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult is our first novel. We are going to work together with Miss Nancy J Libbee's class in the USA. She visited us last year and now we're going to work with her English class by sharing our reading, analysis and discussion on this book.
Before starting I want to share these book trailers with you and I expect you to post your comments describing your first impressions on the book.
Hope to read you!

Welcome to Literature 2009!

Welcome to our blog! Here we will keep in touch during the whole school year and share our activities.Instructions: For each reading assignment I would like you to post something to this blog about the reading. Among the things you may want to comment on are:
1- Things that have happened in the story at this point and their significance to the overall story.
2- Characters (their actions, motivations, what they say, how they affect other characters, etc.)
3- Quotes from the reading, especially if they are significant in developing the many themes in the novel.
4- Questions that you have about what you've read (including things you don't understand)Make sure that you put your name at the beginning of each entry you make so that we know who you are as we read the blog.I hope to make this blog a major part of our class discussion over the daily reading, but how effective that is depends entirely on what you contribute.Remember, you need to post something for each reading assignment, and it must be posted before you come to class. I will leave the length up to you, but what you write should be long enough to meaningfully contribute to our discussion. I will discuss with you a fair way to give credit for these blog postings.

A quote or two

What is important is to keep learning, to enjoy challenge, and to tolerate ambiguity. In the end there are no certain answers.
